In the first phase, recycling and cathode production take priority, with the recycling facility slated to start construction in 2027, and the entire complex occupying roughly 700,000 square meters of industrial space.

During construction, the project is expected to create about 2,500 jobs, and once operational, around 1,000 direct jobs, positioning Valladolid as a potential European battery hub with export ambitions to Latin America.

Gotion envisions a broader Valladolid ecosystem of up to eight factories with total investment reaching as much as €5 billion, signaling long-term expansion beyond the initial phase.

Gotion High-Tech plans a battery gigafactory complex in Valladolid, Spain, starting with two factories focused on cathode production and battery recycling, backed by an initial investment of about €950 million.

Raw materials are expected to arrive from Morocco, and the plan envisions a large solar power plant to power the facilities, possibly requiring up to 1,000 hectares and possibly prompting an amendment to Valladolid’s General Urban Planning Plan.

The venture has secured about €138 million in public subsidies under Spain’s PERTE VEC V program, allocated as €82.3 million for the black mass recycling unit and €55.9 million for the cathode factory, roughly 15% of the first-phase investment.

The project sits within a dense local political and administrative context, involving Valladolid city hall and regional authorities, and follows the withdrawal of a prior investor from Valladolid.

The cathode factory is strategically vital, since cathodes make up around 60% of a battery’s value and Europe currently has no EU-based cathode production, making this a step toward reducing reliance on Asia.
