Education Reform in Wallonia-Bruxelles Raises Exam Passing Thresholds for 2027
July 18, 2025
Starting from June 2027, the education reform in the Federation Wallonie-Bruxelles will raise the minimum passing thresholds for exams like the CE1D, CESS, and CEB, with students needing at least 60% in each subject for the first two and 50% in each subject plus an overall 60% for the CEB.
The Minister emphasized that increasing these thresholds is not punitive but aims to identify students' difficulties early and provide appropriate support.
This reform, approved by the government, seeks to promote excellence in education and eliminate the lowering of standards that hampers students' success.
Despite the new thresholds, class councils will retain the authority to evaluate students individually and award the CEB based on their annual work.
The new thresholds will be implemented starting with the June 2027 exams, according to Education Minister Valérie Glatigny.
Studies suggest that raising thresholds could result in approximately 1,500 additional failures in 6th grade and over 10,000 in secondary school.
The reform aims to improve overall educational quality and ensure students are better prepared for future challenges.
To support students through this transition, an additional deployment of 100 full-time equivalents will be dedicated to assisting 6th-grade students.
