Niedersachsen to Launch €800M Tablet Program for Students and Teachers by 2030
January 18, 2026
In the upcoming summer, about 76,000 seventh-graders will be affected as the program rolls out, with an estimated 169,440 devices needed for the 2026/27 school year to cover students, plus roughly 83,000 tablets for teachers and replacement devices, though procurement will include some flexibility.
The tablet variants will come with accessories such as display protection, a keyboard case, a Smart Pencil, and a power adapter, while notebooks will be supplied with power adapters only.
Devices will be delivered to schools through the IT.Niedersachsen service provider after orders are placed, with loan framework details still in preparation.
Schools will have four device options: Apple iPad 11th generation, Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 Lite, Lenovo 100e Chromebook Gen4, and the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen7 with Windows 11 Pro for special needs.
Starting next school year, Niedersachsen will provide free loaner tablets to students, initially for seventh graders and expanding to tenth grade by the 2029/30 school year, with some schools possibly starting later.
The project is estimated to cost up to €800 million, covering procurement and administration through the 2030/31 school year.
