Mercedes EQS Revamp: 800-Volt Charging, AI Enhancements, and Steer-by-Wire Debut
April 13, 2026
Mercedes refreshes the EQS with a major hardware overhaul, introducing an 800-volt system capable of up to 350 kW charging that can add roughly 200 miles in about 10 minutes under ideal conditions, and a claimed WLTP range of 575 miles, making it a leader in range among rivals.
A new steer-by-wire system with a yoke-style steering wheel debuts as a first for Mercedes, promising improved dash visibility and potential maneuverability benefits, while remaining optional in the U.S. at an as-yet-unannounced price.
Advanced driver assistance packages remain robust, including distance control, parking assist, lane and steering assist, and an Evasive Steering Function Plus.
Mercedes continues to offer extensive customization through Manufaktur Made to Measure, with more than 100 paint colors and bespoke interior options, albeit with pricing details for the updated EQS not yet disclosed.
MB.OS brings real-time 3D mapping through MBUX Surround Navigation to boost driver awareness, complemented by AI-driven features and a larger Hyperscreen driven by an updated software platform.
The EQS gains AI integration, an AI-powered assistant, OTA software updates, and a 55-inch Hyperscreen with a Zero Layer interface that adapts the main display to user behavior.
Steer-by-wire is paired with 10-degree rear-axle steering and redundant signal paths for safety, marking a major technological leap for Mercedes' production cars.
Pricing and timing are set for a late-2026 US launch, with base prices starting around 94,403 euros in Europe as part of the updated lineup.
Design shifts revert from the earlier black plastic grille mask to a conventional grille, with the three-pointed star returning atop the grille.
Interior updates include refined front-door panels with stitched accents, redesigned cupholders, and heated front seatbelts; the cabin also benefits from a larger dashboard screen and broader app support.
Several enhancements expand comfort and practicality, including cloud-based AIRMATIC damping from Car-to-X data, heated seatbelts, a HEPA filter, increased towing capacity to 1,600 kg for RWD, a leather-free interior option, and Manufaktur Made to Measure offering extensive color and material customization.
Exterior updates include a refreshed bonnet, front and rear light strips, revised bumpers, and a low drag coefficient of 0.20 to boost efficiency.
