Extreme Heat Ravages LPGA Shanghai Greens, Disrupts Tournament Play
October 9, 2025
The damage to the greens was visibly severe, with areas appearing dry and uneven, and some greens so ravaged that placing holes has become difficult, affecting both play and scoring.
The LPGA event at Qizhong Garden Golf Club in Shanghai faced severe damage to its greens due to extreme heat, making it one of the toughest course conditions seen this year in professional golf.
This recent weather-related disruption follows previous issues at the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship, where heavy thunderstorms led to the tournament being shortened and ultimately canceled because of unplayable conditions.
The LPGA has acknowledged the challenging course conditions in a statement, noting that tournament officials are actively monitoring and caring for the course amidst the extreme weather.
The extreme heat was driven by an unusually hot September in Shanghai, which saw 23 days with temperatures reaching at least 95 degrees Fahrenheit, well above the typical range of 80 to 90 degrees.
