Portuguese Communist Party Convenes After Historic Electoral Defeat, Plans Counter to Right-Wing Policies
May 20, 2025
The Central Committee of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) is convening for the first time since the legislative elections held on May 18, 2025, which resulted in the party's poorest performance ever, capturing only 3.03% of the votes.
This critical meeting, taking place today, is aimed at analyzing the political and social landscape following the recent electoral outcomes.
The CDU also faced losses, dropping to three deputies, while both the Bloco de Esquerda and PAN retained only one representative each.
As a result of this electoral setback, the PCP's representation in parliament has dwindled to just three deputies.
In light of the election results, Raimundo has stressed the importance of a united front among democrats to counter right-wing policies, declaring, 'This is not the time to support right-wing policies.'
In these elections, the AD coalition emerged victorious with 89 deputies, while both the PS and Chega secured 58 deputies each, illustrating a highly competitive political environment.
At 6:00 PM, Secretary-General Paulo Raimundo will hold a press conference at the party's national headquarters in Lisbon to present the conclusions of the meeting.
Additionally, the JPP from Madeira successfully elected one deputy, and results from voters residing abroad are expected to be announced on May 28, 2025.
During the meeting, the committee may consider proposing a motion of rejection against the government's program, reminiscent of a similar initiative announced by Raimundo after the March 2024 elections.
The PCP's newly elected deputies include Paulo Raimundo, Paula Santos, and Alfredo Maia.
In contrast, the Iniciativa Liberal increased its representation by one seat to nine, and the Livre party expanded from four to six seats.
