€230M Lajes das Flores Port Rebuild Begins, Aims for 2030 Completion
May 20, 2025
The new port of Lajes das Flores in the Azores is set to cost around €230 million and is expected to be completed by 2030.
The construction plan includes rebuilding the breakwater, a new pier, and a passenger station building.
This project marks the formal beginning of construction, which follows the destruction of the previous infrastructure by Hurricane Lorenzo in October 2019.
The total budget for the project includes a contract value of €194.83 million plus VAT, with €167.5 million coming from community funds under the Sustainable 2030 program.
Financing for the port was approved on January 3, 2025, with a total investment of €197,059,825, including €167,500,851 from the Cohesion Fund.
Berta Cabral, the Secretary of Tourism, Mobility and Infrastructure, highlighted the port as the most significant project undertaken by the Azorean government.
To further support the project, the Azorean government will contribute €30 million from its budget over the next five years.
The port's reconstruction aims to address vulnerabilities exposed by climate change, particularly after infrastructure was affected by Storm Efrain in December 2022.
The construction is expected to take approximately 60 months, ensuring the port is operational by the target completion date in 2030.
