CESPU transitions from a cooperative higher education network to a full university under the RJIES reform, with the Instituto Universitário de Ciências da Saúde – CESPU rebranding to Universidade CESPU.

The student body now includes students from 21 nationalities, with more than half of enrollments being international, underscoring strong European Union focus.

The university offers 14 degree programs, spanning six bachelor's degrees, three integrated master’s programs, three master’s degrees, and two PhDs, with specializations in Biomedical Sciences, Forensic Sciences, Nutrition Science, Psychology, Public Health, and Health Administration and Management.

This marks a major milestone after 44 years in Gandra, Paredes, expanding higher education in the Norte region and concentrating on Health and Life Sciences.

Despite the rebranding, the institution maintains a practical, applied teaching approach that keeps strong ties to local territories and economic needs, per CCISP clarification.

Leadership titles shift as Polytechnic presidents become reitores (rectors) of Polytechnic Universities, with direct election by the academic community.

Under Antonio Almeida-Diaz’s leadership, the transformation strengthens health education, research, and internationalization, backed by unrestricted accreditation and top-tier research recognized by FCT.

The RJIES reform joins 13 polytechnic institutes into Polytechnic Universities, aligning Beja, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Covilhã and Beira regions with others across the country.
