A Mumbai-based assistant professor, Janvi, alleges harassment by local taxi drivers and police in Munnar after attempting to hire an app-based taxi.

She posted a three-minute video detailing the incident, saying online platforms like Uber and Ola were blocked by local taxi unions, forcing her to rely on local options that complied with union rules.

Janvi claims drivers followed and threatened her Uber driver, and police advised that travel via Uber or Ola was not permitted.

District Police Chief K M Sabu Mathew ordered suspension of officers following findings by Special Branch and Intelligence Wing about dereliction of duty, with investigations ongoing.

Tourism Minister P. A. Mohammed Riyas called the incident unfortunate and pledged corrective steps to ensure tourist safety and prevent recurrence.

Riyas reiterated that Kerala is a safe destination for tourists and urged cross-department discussions to stop similar incidents.

Initial responses from police and the Kerala Tourism Department were lacking, and a case was registered only after the incident went online.

The Kerala High Court had previously ruled in favor of online taxis, affirming customers’ right to choose their travel providers.

The FIR notes no property loss, and the investigation is led by Sub-Inspector Deepak P P of Munnar Police Station.

The incident reportedly occurred on October 30; police are reviewing officers’ conduct and seeking Janvi’s statement as part of the investigation.

Authorities are verifying the officers’ actions at the scene and attempting to contact Janvi to record her statement.

The episode drew attention to safety and regulation of taxi services and app-based transport in Kerala, with authorities promising action to protect tourists and hospital standards.
