Doncaster Introduces New 180-Litre Brown Recycling Bins Under National Kerbside Collection Rules
May 13, 2026
Because of a mid-contract with Veolia, Doncaster, alongside Barnsley, Rotherham and Sheffield, will be exempt from food waste collections until 2040.
Glass will continue to be collected in the green box, garden waste in green bins, and the blue bin and green boxes will be retained for current materials.
The brown bin will be used for liquid cartons, tins and cans, foil, empty aerosols, plastic bottles and lids, plastic pots, tubs and trays, lids from glass containers, plastic bags and film; the blue bin will handle paper and card, and the green box will handle glass; garden waste remains in green bins.
Councillor Glyn Jones said the separate-bin system for paper and card aligns with national legislation and neighboring towns and aims to be the most convenient option for residents.
Doncaster will introduce a brown 180-litre recycling bin to collect additional recyclables as part of new national rules that require separate kerbside collections for dry recyclables and food waste.
The council cabinet is expected to approve the rollout at a meeting on May 20.
Residents will receive clear guidance on the changes, with the brown bins rolling out in the autumn and first collections starting in spring 2027.
