China Urges India to Unite Against Trade Wars, Boosts Multilateral Ties Amid Global Tensions
September 8, 2025
China's Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, called for India and China to unite against protectionism, tariffs, and trade wars, emphasizing the importance of upholding the multilateral trading system amidst growing economic and cultural exchanges, including issuing over 240,000 visas to Indian citizens this year.
He stressed the need for an equal, multipolar world order and urged both nations to support multilateral trade systems to safeguard the interests of developing countries.
Reiterating China's support for reforming global governance, Xu referenced the Global Governance Initiative announced during the SCO Plus meeting, advocating for a more just and equitable international system.
He highlighted the global rise in unilateralism and bullying, calling for a multipolar world, inclusive economic growth, and opposition to trade wars.
In the context of recent US criticism of India’s trade practices and energy purchases from Russia, Xu emphasized peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, and the importance of regional stability for bilateral ties.
Xu paid tribute to Indian support during wartime, including Indian participation in building the Ledo Road and Mahatma Gandhi’s expressions of sympathy for China’s struggle.
He acknowledged Indian medical professionals like Dr. Kotnis and Dr. Basu for their contributions to China-India medical exchanges and friendship, highlighting their roles during wartime.
Recent high-level visits, such as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s attendance at the SCO summit in China and President Xi Jinping’s calls to oppose bullying, reflect efforts to strengthen multilateralism and regional cooperation.
Meanwhile, the US's tariffs and strained relations with China and Russia have complicated India’s foreign policy, prompting New Delhi to pursue strategic autonomy and balanced diplomacy in an increasingly polarized global landscape.
Following Trump’s remarks criticizing India’s trade practices, India’s leadership responded with a tempered stance, reaffirming strong relations with Modi but criticizing the impact of tariffs on India’s international standing.
Xu emphasized the importance of both China and India devoting resources to national development and regional stability, setting an example for neighboring major countries.
