Virgin Atlantic has completed the first transatlantic flight powered solely by sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The flight used a Boeing 787 filled with 50 tonnes of SAF, 88% of which was derived from waste fats and corn production waste.

SAF has the potential to reduce emissions by up to 70%, but currently represents just 0.1% of global jet fuel usage.

The UK government plans to make 10% of aviation fuel from SAF by 2030.

Critics argue that SAF is expensive and advocate for synthetic fuels or electric battery-powered models.
