South Korea Unveils Advanced L-SAM Missile System, Bolstering Defense Against North Korean Threats
November 29, 2024South Korea has successfully developed the long-range surface-to-air missile system (L-SAM), significantly enhancing its air defense capabilities against North Korean missile threats.
The L-SAM is designed to intercept targets at altitudes exceeding 40 kilometers, with operational capabilities reaching between 50 to 60 kilometers.
Production of the L-SAM is scheduled to begin in early 2025, with plans for it to be operational by the mid-to-late 2020s.
A completion ceremony for the L-SAM was held on November 29, 2024, at the Agency for Defense Development in Daejeon, attended by senior officials including Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun.
The development of the L-SAM involved collaboration with three domestic companies, showcasing South Korea's growing military technology capabilities.
The missile system incorporates advanced features such as infrared image search technology for target detection and a double pulse propulsion engine for trajectory adjustments.
Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun emphasized the L-SAM's role in protecting South Korean airspace and warned North Korea of severe consequences for any missile provocations.
The L-SAM's development comes amid heightened security concerns due to North Korea's frequent missile launches and its military cooperation with Russia.
The military successfully tested the L-SAM's capabilities in May 2023, demonstrating its effectiveness in intercepting ballistic missiles.
Plans are in place to deploy four L-SAM batteries by 2027 in strategic locations across southern Seoul and various provinces.
Utilizing a 'Hit To Kill' interception method, the L-SAM positions South Korea among a select group of nations with advanced missile defense technology.
Interest in the L-SAM from Middle Eastern countries indicates potential export opportunities and its impact on the international defense market.
