Bucks County District Attorney expands the county’s federal lawsuit against social media platforms, adding X Corp., Roblox Corporation, Discord Inc., and Meta Platforms Technologies, LLC to allege they fuel a youth mental health and child safety crisis.

The amended complaint, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, marks Bucks County as the first DA’s Office to sue X Corp. according to the announcement.

Originally filed in 2023 against TikTok, Instagram, and other sites, the expanded suit now includes Roblox and alleges lax parental notifications and inadequate age verification on Roblox.

The filing argues that platforms fail to protect children despite public commitments, pointing to leadership decisions like dissolving X’s Trust and Safety Council and other internal assessments of weak age verification and content moderation.

The DA alleges defective reporting systems, weak parental controls, and manipulative algorithms that expose children to trauma, grooming, and exploitation, while claiming AI and ML tools maximize screen time and compulsive use.

Specific accusations include Discord defaulting to private messaging with minors and misleading Safe Direct Messaging, X Corp.’s Grok generating sexual images of children at high rates, and Roblox being used by predators due to lax safeguards.

Discord’s default private messages and friend requests to minors are cited as a risk factor, with the Safe Direct Messaging marketing described as misleading amid CSAM on servers.

X Corp.’s leadership under Elon Musk is said to have deprioritized child safety, including the 2022 dissolution of the Trust and Safety Council, with Grok allegedly producing nonconsensual sexual images of real minors.

Roblox is alleged to have lax parental controls and insufficient age-verification, enabling predators to contact minors and solicit explicit material, with a local case already leading to a prison sentence.

The expanded suit ties platform design flaws to real-world harms, referencing a Bucks County case where a resident pled guilty to child sexual abuse involving Roblox.

The complaint emphasizes the use of AI and machine learning to maximize screen time and deliver dangerous content to youth, seeking to halt these practices and recover public resources spent on related harms.

Local support comes from Bucks County officials backing the action as a response to online safety gaps ignored by platforms.
