Today, the future of the Voting Rights Act is at risk as a far-right Supreme Court has recently gutted key provisions, weakening protections against racial discrimination in voting.

Some Republican policy efforts, including the SAVE America Act, are described as attempts to roll back voting rights and promote voter suppression nationwide.

As a result, more than a dozen House districts currently led by Black Democrats could be eliminated, highlighting ongoing threats to Black and brown voters’ access to the ballot.

The Voting Rights Act, enacted 61 years ago, banned racial discrimination in voting and protected Black Americans’ access to the ballot after decades of discriminatory practices.

The Act was established in the wake of Bloody Sunday in 1965, when civil rights marchers were violently attacked in Selma, Alabama, while demanding voting rights.
