Lagos to Enforce Single-Use Plastic Ban by 2025, Exempting Thicker Nylon Bags
May 19, 2025
The Lagos State Government is set to fully enforce a ban on Single-Use Plastics (SUPs) starting July 1, 2025, as announced by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab.
This ban will exempt nylon carrier bags that are thicker than 40 microns, addressing concerns raised by misleading reports on social media.
Wahab emphasized that the government has engaged in 18 months of discussions with stakeholders, including producers and marketers, to prepare for this transition.
The enforcement follows an 18-month moratorium that began after the initial announcement in January 2024, allowing producers time to adjust.
Wahab stated that strict enforcement will begin on the enforcement date, with penalties for non-compliance potentially including fines and jail terms for repeat offenders.
These initiatives are part of broader efforts to combat climate change, reduce biodiversity loss, and address the health risks associated with plastic pollution.
He highlighted the significant environmental and public health risks posed by plastic waste in Lagos, particularly given its coastal location and dense population.
The government also plans to support businesses by promoting local production of eco-friendly alternatives and providing compliance incentives.
Major retailers like ShopRite have begun complying with the ban by phasing out nylon bags, although overall compliance among retailers has been inconsistent.
To support the initiative, the government has established a Plastic Waste Management Fund, which will be financed by contributions from producers and major importers.
Environmental advocates support the ban but stress the need for the government to provide alternatives and incentives for businesses transitioning to sustainable packaging.
Climate advocate Olumide Idowu praised the initiative as a step towards aligning Lagos with global sustainability goals.
