YSU Secures $320K Grant to Lead AI Literacy Project, Pioneering Ethical AI Education
September 17, 2025
YSU has received a $320,000 NSF grant to develop a three-year AI literacy project for undergraduate engineering and technology students, starting October 1, aiming to integrate AI into the curriculum.
The project, led by Corey Brozina in collaboration with George Mason University professor Aditya Johri, will include role-playing scenarios on responsible AI applications like automated hiring and sustainability.
This initiative focuses on equipping students with technical skills to use AI responsibly and ethically through case-based scenarios that simulate real-world AI applications.
Brozina’s leadership in AI education positions YSU as a national leader, influencing broader discussions on AI literacy in higher education.
YSU’s commitment to innovation and student preparedness for AI-driven workplaces is demonstrated through this project, contributing to national conversations on AI literacy.
Corey Brozina, an associate professor at YSU's Rayen School of Engineering, has received his fourth NSF grant, totaling approximately $1.6 million, including the largest in YSU history in 2020, underscoring his leadership in AI research.
The AI literacy case studies developed at YSU will be shared with other universities nationwide, such as the University of Florida, Texas A&M, and Ohio State, to expand AI education.
Once piloted and refined at YSU, the curriculum will be disseminated to other institutions, positioning YSU as a leader among similar-sized universities.
