The Council of Europe has adopted a groundbreaking treaty on artificial intelligence (AI) to uphold human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.

The Framework Convention on AI covers the entire lifecycle of AI systems and promotes responsible innovation.

Non-European countries can also sign the treaty, with eleven non-member states participating in its drafting.

The convention will be open for signature in September in Lithuania.

The treaty requires accountability for adverse impacts, respect for equality, and privacy rights.

The treaty aims to ensure a responsible use of AI that respects human rights, the rule of law, and democracy.
