Mistral AI announces its first acquisition, buying French cloud startup Koyeb to accelerate its compute and AI cloud capabilities, signaling a move to own both AI models and the infrastructure that runs them.

The deal fits Mistral’s European strategy to build a sovereign AI stack independent of U.S. hyperscalers, aligning with its €1.2 billion Swedish data center investment.

Koyeb brings an autoscaling cloud platform that deploys applications in minutes and can relaunch idle workloads in under 200 milliseconds, with prior funding of about $7 million in 2023.

Before the deal, Koyeb had raised approximately $8.6 million in total funding, with leadership emphasizing Europe’s sovereign AI infrastructure.

Founded in 2019, Koyeb offers a serverless cloud platform that runs applications across multiple cloud providers to reduce developer complexity.

Koyeb operates up to eight-GPU instances across ten data centers worldwide, with built-in redundancy and new Koyeb Sandboxes for isolated AI agents at scale.

Mistral has raised nearly €2.8 billion and reached a €11.7 billion valuation since its 2023 launch, underscoring strong growth and investor confidence.

Existing Koyeb customers will experience a smooth transition as the platform remains operational while integrating deeper into Mistral Compute.

Mistral, based in Paris, develops an open-source LLM lineup and offers paid services including the Mistral Compute cloud platform, having been valued at €11.7 billion after a €1.7 billion round led by ASML in 2025.

Koyeb’s 13 employees and three co-founders will join Mistral’s engineering team, with the platform slated to become a core component of Mistral Compute in the coming months.

Koyeb is a Paris-area company that will contribute to Mistral’s sovereign AI cloud objectives after joining in March.

The move is framed as both a business strategy and a geopolitical signal that Europe aims to compete in AI infrastructure, not just models.
