Fiddler Ashley MacIsaac Sues Google Over Defamatory AI Summary, Potential Landmark Case in AI Liability
May 4, 2026
Cape Breton fiddler Ashley MacIsaac has filed a defamation lawsuit against Google LLC in Canada, alleging that an AI overview created by Google published false statements about him.
MacIsaac says the erroneous AI summary caused deep fear and negatively affected him on stage, with potential long-term consequences.
The AI overview allegedly claimed MacIsaac had sexual-offense convictions, including sexual assault and offenses involving a child, and asserted he was a registered sex offender, leading to personal and professional harm, including a concert cancellation.
The case has not yet been adjudicated, and none of the claims has been tested in court.
Legal expert Howard Winkler says the case could significantly shape AI product liability and defamation law, noting that traditional precedents like Crookes v. Newton may not neatly apply to AI, and a ruling could influence accountability for AI platforms.
Google or its law firm Torys did not respond to requests for comment at the time of reporting.
As a workaround, some users add “-ai” to search queries to try to suppress top AI overviews, illustrating attempts to mitigate impact.
Google stated in December 2025 that the AI Overview linking to criminal offenses no longer appeared and noted it uses problematic examples to improve systems and may take action under its policies.
The Canadian Press confirms the report, first published May 4, 2026, with reporting by Michael MacDonald.
MacIsaac aims to use the case to shield others from similar harm, while remaining open to AI’s potential benefits and advocating for guardrails and accountability.
Google issued a statement about ongoing AI Overviews improvements and noted they may take action under policies when issues arise; the AI Overview for MacIsaac now mentions the legal action.
Google Canada has said AI summaries are frequently updated to be helpful and that misinterpretations are used to improve the system; the company did not provide comment on the suit.
