The master plan for Korea’s AI safety ecosystem seeks a balance between accelerating AI innovation and ensuring safety, while strengthening national response capabilities to advanced AI risks and establishing a formal safety management system across government, industry, and society.

Lee Jin-soo, an AI policy planning officer, notes the initiative builds on efforts like the Basic Artificial Intelligence Act and aims to enhance the nation’s ability to respond to risks from cutting-edge AI.

A consultative body will review three core strategies—creating a national AI safety management system, boosting capabilities to handle advanced AI safety, and fostering a safe AI environment in daily life—and will identify tasks aligned with global policies and industry trends.

The consultative group will gather industry experiences and expert perspectives to examine policy tasks from technology, policy, and legal angles and inform the master plan.

About 25 members from ministries, the National AI Strategy Committee, AI safety institutions, domestic and international AI companies and associations, and experts in technology, policy, and law will participate, including startups and SMEs.

Participants include MSIT, the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee, the AI Safety Institute, NIA, KISDI, and TTA, alongside AI companies, startups, industry associations, and AI/tech experts.

The body will review stakeholder and expert input and, after coordinating with related ministries, aim to finalize the master plan by December of this year.

MSIT in Korea is forming a national AI safety ecosystem master plan and will launch a public-private, working-level consultative body in October to shape the plan and guide implementation.

The ministry will assemble a working-level public-private group to develop the master plan and begin active implementation in the month following October.
