Google Expands AI Education in India, Partners with IIT Bombay and State Governments for Teacher Training
October 15, 2026
Google is expanding its AI education initiative in India beyond the AI Educator Series by backing 100 Atal Tinkering Labs through ATL Saathi, a Gemini-powered desktop app for STEM curricula, and partnering with IIT Bombay and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser on educational AI research.
The effort includes new partnerships with the governments of Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Sikkim, plus the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship to extend AI teacher training.
Offline and online courses are being rolled out in multiple languages, with English currently available and Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Assamese, Odia, and Punjabi versions planned for release later in October.
The program aims to help teachers use AI tools for lesson planning, material preparation, and routine academic work, offering online, free, self-paced modules in several languages.
In Sikkim, the Education Department signed a Statement of Intent on October 6 to introduce the program in higher education, covering faculty from 15 government colleges and Khangchendzonga State University, with a focus on integrating AI into teaching and lesson prep.
The Google AI Educator Series introduces educators to AI tools like Gemini and Gemini Notebook to enhance lesson planning and material development, aligning with NEP 2020.
Since its May 2026 launch, more than 80,000 educators have completed the Google AI Educator Series training in India.
In Bihar, the Department of Science, Technology and Technical Education signed a Statement of Intent with Google in September to promote AI-enabled teaching and digital education, offering training in Hindi and English and emphasizing AI as a teaching aid, not a substitute for learning.
The training emphasizes tasks that consume teachers’ time outside classroom instruction, such as lesson planning, creating exercises, and organizing academic work, while underscoring the need to assess AI-generated material for accuracy and suitability.
Madhya Pradesh has been named as a new partner to broaden the program’s reach across the state.
