Agent Skills Donated to AAIF Under Linux Foundation, Ensuring Open, Community-Driven Development
October 22, 2026
Agent Skills, an open standard that defines skills as folders with a SKILL.md and related assets, is being donated to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) under the Linux Foundation.
The donation transfers ownership of the name, logo, GitHub organization, and agentskills.io domain to AAIF, while allowing continued use and contribution without joining AAIF, ensuring the project remains open, community-driven, and vendor-neutral.
AAIF will provide a neutral home for the standard and ensure ongoing community input, outlining a roadmap with versioned releases, a formal proposal process, and security guidance for writing and installing skills.
AAIF will facilitate future directions through governance that includes community involvement.
Lead maintainers David Soria Parra and Mahesh Murag oversee a team of engineers from Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and others who contribute to maintaining the standard.
Since its December 2025 publication, Agent Skills has achieved wide adoption with integration across more than 70 agent platforms including ChatGPT, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and VS Code, boasting over 1 million skills published and nearly 280 million installs.
Contributors are acknowledged, and readers are invited to read the specification and join discussions at agentskills.io and on GitHub.
Community feedback is encouraged through AAIF’s governance via a Discord channel and GitHub discussions to shape specification changes.
