BITS Pilani Overhauls Curriculum for AI Era, Boosts Flexibility and Wellbeing Focus
October 25, 2026
BITS Pilani is revamping its undergraduate curriculum to prepare students for the AI era, offering greater flexibility in subject choice and stronger integration of research, industry practice, and student wellbeing.
The changes balance disciplinary study with interdisciplinary electives, research, industry exposure, and structured non-credit activities to address AI’s impact on education and concerns about student mental health.
There is a stronger emphasis on research and project work, expanding the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) with Advanced UROP and Super UROP so students can tackle societal problems with funded solutions.
The Practice School programme will provide industry mentorship, while entrepreneurship pathways help students move ideas beyond academia.
A new Points of Experience framework embeds physical and mental wellbeing, social conduct, and community engagement into UG programmes, requiring 30 Points of Experience (about 60 hours) earned through activities rather than credits.
The university has invested over Rs 50 crore this year to upgrade undergraduate laboratories across Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad, aligning facilities with technological advances.
The curriculum aims to democratize access to knowledge, build student confidence and independent skills, and connect learners with societal problems through funded projects within the curriculum.
The initiative reflects a broader emphasis on mental health alongside technical education, signaling leadership in integrating wellbeing into undergraduate studies.
The revamped program blends science, engineering, and computing with humanities and arts, adding design thinking, entrepreneurship, and real-world problem-solving.
Emerging areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, software construction, quantum information and computation, astronomy, and materials chemistry are emphasized, with increased opportunities for interdisciplinary electives.
Professor V. Ramgopal Rao notes the changes respond to AI’s impact on education and rising mental health concerns, prioritizing hands-on learning and integral research through UROP and its variants.
