Bus Driver Pleads Guilty to Fatal NSW Crash Amid Manslaughter Charge Outcry
May 8, 2024
Bus driver Brett Andrew Button has pleaded guilty to 10 counts of dangerous driving causing death related to the NSW Hunter Valley bus crash in June 2023.
The NSW Director of Public Prosecutions dropped 10 counts of manslaughter against Button, a decision that has led to outrage among victims' families.
The crash occurred while Button was transporting 35 wedding guests, resulting in the coach rolling over at a roundabout and inflicting catastrophic injuries.
A police fact sheet indicated that Button taunted passengers about his speeding prior to the crash.
Button's sentencing date is pending, and he did not enter pleas to backup charges, with an additional 25 charges being withdrawn.
Button had previously been on bail due to mental health concerns and had issued an apology for the crash.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has not provided an explanation for the withdrawal of the manslaughter charges.
