A crime scene has been established at St John Street, and certain streets in the area remain closed while investigations continue.

A knife-wielding man was shot dead by police in Launceston's CBD during a confrontation on December 3, 2024.

The incident began around 10 AM when a member of the public alerted authorities about the man's threatening behavior on St Johns Street.

Officers attempted to negotiate with the man, who reportedly ignored repeated warnings to disarm, and despite the deployment of OC spray, he continued to advance towards them.

During the incident, one police officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries from a bullet and is receiving treatment at Launceston General Hospital.

Two shots struck the man in the chest, and he was taken to Launceston General Hospital in critical condition before being pronounced dead shortly after.

Authorities confirmed that no other individuals were injured and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

A police investigation into the incident is underway, and the Coroner and Integrity Commission have been notified.

The man had a history known to police and initially threatened individuals at a business before moving to the street, with no current evidence of drug or alcohol involvement.

Assistant Commissioner Adrian Bodnar described the event as traumatic and tragic, extending thoughts and support to all affected, including the police officers and their families.

A Professional Standards investigation has been initiated, and the man's next of kin is being notified.

Bodnar emphasized that lethal force is a last resort for police and expressed regret over the incident's outcome.
