Australia Raises HELP Debt Repayment Threshold, Easing Financial Burden for Millions
December 16, 2024
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reaffirmed the government's commitment to maintaining a fair and affordable education system in Australia.
To enhance this commitment, the government plans to raise the income threshold for repaying Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) debt by over 20%, increasing it from $54,435 in the 2024-25 fiscal year to $67,000 in 2025-26.
Under the new repayment system, borrowers will only be required to make repayments on income exceeding $67,000, rather than on their total income.
This change is expected to provide lower-income individuals with increased disposable income, allowing them to start repaying their loans only when financially feasible, according to the Department of Education.
If the proposed legislation is approved by parliament, approximately three million Australian workers with HELP debt could experience financial relief in the upcoming fiscal year.
One of Australia’s largest tax accountancy groups has described these proposed amendments as a 'game changer' for individuals with HECS debt.
Mark Chapman, Director of Tax Communications at H & R Block Australia, highlighted that the changes would significantly benefit borrowers by lowering loan balances due to reduced indexation rates and higher repayment thresholds.
Individuals earning less than $180,000 annually will financially benefit from these changes, while those earning above this threshold will see no alterations to their repayments.
For instance, a person earning $70,000 would see their repayments decrease by $1,300, resulting in a payment of $450, while someone earning $80,000 would pay $1,950 after a reduction of $850 in repayments.
The opposition spokesperson for education has been approached for comments regarding these proposed changes.
