The Albanese government is investing $842.5 million over six years to enhance service delivery in remote First Nations communities in the Northern Territory.

This initiative is a collaboration between the federal government, the Northern Territory government, and the Aboriginal Peak Organisations Northern Territory, aiming to improve socio-economic outcomes as outlined in the National Agreement on Closing The Gap.

The funding will support various essential services, including Aboriginal interpreter services, hearing and oral health services, policing, women's safety, education, and alcohol harm reduction.

Northern Territory Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro welcomed the funding, particularly noting that $205.9 million will be allocated to enhance remote policing efforts.

The initiative is expected to create over 570 jobs, with more than 278 positions dedicated to First Nations Territorians, ensuring access to vital services in these communities.

Lingiari MP Marion Scrymgour praised the agreement, highlighting its benefits for remote communities that are crucial to the Northern Territory's culture and connection to the land.

Scrymgour emphasized the significance of this investment in improving the living conditions of over 70 remote communities she represents, which have a high Indigenous population.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has stressed the importance of closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, advocating for equal opportunities for all citizens.

This announcement follows a visit by Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to Alice Springs, where he expressed support for measures addressing crime and anti-social behavior, criticizing the previous Labor government's inaction.

Albanese plans to officially announce this initiative during his visit to the Northern Territory on February 7, 2025.
