Australia's Job Market Shrinks by 52,800 in February, Older Workers Retiring Impacting Employment Numbers
March 20, 2025
Australia's job market faced a significant setback in February 2025, unexpectedly shrinking by 52,800 jobs, contrary to expectations of an increase.
This decline in employment was largely attributed to older workers retiring, although the unemployment rate remained steady at 4.1 percent.
Bjorn Jarvis, head of labour statistics at the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), noted a decrease in older workers returning to the workforce, following higher employment levels in this demographic during 2024.
Despite the recent decline, Australian financial markets predict only an 8% chance of a rate cut by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in their upcoming April meeting.
Signs of cooling in the labor market may provide the RBA with the opportunity to lower interest rates further, following a 25 basis point cut in February.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers is preparing to present his fourth Budget next week, with an election scheduled for May.
Chalmers highlighted that over one million jobs have been created under the current Labor government, marking a record for a parliamentary term.
The tight labor market has contributed to consumer spending and inflation, although wage growth in Australia has stagnated.
The labor market has remained tight over the past three years, characterized by a shortage of skilled workers and a high number of job openings.
The latest job data was released shortly after the US Federal Reserve announced it would maintain interest rates, citing solid economic growth.
The participation rate decreased to 66.8%, falling short of the anticipated record high, while the employment-to-population ratio also saw a slight decline.
Despite the decline in jobs, employment levels in February 2025 were still about 266,000 higher than in February 2024, aligning with pre-pandemic averages.
