Sydney Driverless Train Horror: Open Door at 100 km/h Sparks Safety Concerns
April 2, 2025
On April 1, 2025, during peak hour, passengers on a driverless metro train in Sydney faced a terrifying situation when a door remained open while the train was traveling at high speeds.
The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m. on the city-bound service between Chatswood and Crows Nest stations on the M1 metro line, a particularly busy route.
As the train traveled at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, passengers were seen gripping handrails for safety, their hair blowing in the wind from the open doors.
Video footage captured the alarming scene, showing passengers visibly anxious while staff attempted to manage the situation through radio communication.
Two staff members on board communicated with the Operational Control Centre to resolve the door fault, which was identified at approximately 8:01 a.m.
Despite attempts to fix the door remotely, staff had to manually close it once the train reached the next station, Crows Nest.
An electronic sign near the door indicated it was out of service, but this did not prevent the door from remaining open during the journey.
Metro Trains Sydney's CEO, Daniel Williams, issued an apology for the incident and confirmed that an investigation is underway to address the issue.
Transport union RTBU's secretary, Toby Warnes, criticized the situation, calling it one of the worst safety incidents on the NSW train network in recent years.
The union emphasized the necessity of having qualified personnel onboard driverless trains to ensure passenger safety during emergencies.
The Sydney Metro line, which cost $25 billion to develop, officially opened in August 2024, following delays for safety checks prior to its launch.
Yahoo News has reached out to Sydney Metro and Transport NSW for further comments regarding the incident.
