A coronial inquest is set to investigate the motives and planning behind Joel Cauchi's deadly attack at Bondi Junction, where six individuals were fatally stabbed on April 13, 2024.

The victims of this tragic incident included Dawn Singleton, Yixuan Cheng, Faraz Ahmed Tahir, Ashlee Good, Jade Young, and Pikria Darchia, all attacked in less than three minutes before police intervened.

On the day of the attack, Cauchi retrieved a Ka-Bar knife from a storage unit and launched his assault shortly after 3 PM at Westfield Bondi Junction.

Family members of the victims have submitted issues for investigation as the five-week coronial inquest is scheduled to begin on April 28, 2025.

The inquest aims to learn lessons to prevent future tragedies rather than assign blame, with various experts expected to provide testimony.

It will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including how Cauchi may have slipped through the mental health system.

Cauchi, diagnosed with schizophrenia at 17, experienced a decline in his mental health after 2020, raising concerns about the adequacy of his treatment and the cessation of his psychotropic medication.

By late 2023, Cauchi was reportedly homeless, living under the Maroubra Beach Pavilion, which highlights the deteriorating state of his mental health.

In January 2023, Cauchi reported to police that his father had stolen knives similar to the weapon used in the attack, indicating potential warning signs regarding his mental state.

Investigations will include the adequacy of Cauchi's mental health treatment prior to the attack and his interactions with police in Queensland and New South Wales.

The families are particularly interested in the effectiveness of security systems at Westfield Bondi Junction, identifying gaps in the mental health system and security guard training as key issues.

Additionally, the inquest will consider enhancing emergency service coordination and communication protocols for informing families after mass casualty events.
