Corrective Services NSW confirmed that an investigation into Torrens's death is underway, including a public inquest by the state coroner.

His arrest came after police released CCTV footage related to Griffin’s death, which was initially ruled an accidental drowning.

Audrey Griffin, a 19-year-old promising athlete and student at the University of Technology Sydney, was reported missing after a night out with friends on March 23, 2025, and her body was discovered partially submerged in Erina Creek 36 hours later.

Torrens was charged with Griffin's murder on April 20, 2025, following a four-week investigation that began after her body was found.

Griffin's mother, Kathleen Kirby, expressed profound grief and dissatisfaction with the initial investigation, prompting further inquiries that led to Torrens' arrest.

Authorities discovered Torrens unresponsive at 4:50 PM, and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful; his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Griffin was honored at a sunset memorial attended by hundreds at Terrigal beach, where attendees wore white and advocated for women's safety.

Police allege that Griffin became involved in a physical altercation with Adrian Torrens, a 53-year-old man charged with her murder, while trying to hail a taxi, which ultimately led to her drowning.

Prior to his murder charge, Torrens faced 11 domestic violence charges unrelated to the case, and he had a history of domestic violence offenses.

Before Griffin's death, Torrens was under an 18-month supervision order for domestic violence offenses, having previously been spared prison time for his convictions.

Tragically, Torrens was found dead in his jail cell at the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre in Sydney on April 24, 2025, just days after being charged.

Despite initial forensic examinations of Griffin's death not indicating suspicious circumstances, authorities found the case unsettling, leading to ongoing investigations.
