May 6, 2025
Seven West Media has entered into a binding agreement to acquire television licences and assets from Southern Cross Media Group for $3.75 million, significantly expanding Channel 7's reach across regional Australia.
The acquisition includes licences operating in key regions such as Tasmania, Darwin, Spencer Gulf in South Australia, Broken Hill in New South Wales, Mt Isa in Queensland, and remote areas in central and eastern Australia.
As a result of this deal, Channel 7 will be able to reach nearly 100% of Australia's population, with the exception of the Riverland region.
This acquisition will enhance Seven West Media's national broadcast network, enabling improved digital offerings through the 7plus platform, which provides both live and on-demand television.
These licences currently facilitate the broadcasting of the Seven Network television signal under an existing Affiliation Agreement with Southern Cross Media.
Furthermore, the acquisition will allow for better targeting of advertising partners through integrated broadcast and digital campaigns, particularly with the launch of the Phoenix total television platform.
Jeff Howard, CEO of Seven West Media, described the acquisition as a strategic move in the company's transformation program, aimed at leveraging content across new markets to increase revenue, earnings, and cash flow.
The transaction is anticipated to be immediately earnings accretive in the fiscal year 2026, with completion expected by June 30, 2025.
