Severe NSW Floods: Thousands at Risk, Evacuations Underway as Torrential Rains Continue
May 21, 2025
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued severe weather warnings, predicting up to 300mm of rain in some areas, which heightens the risk of flash flooding, particularly in coastal regions.
As a result of the intense rainfall, the Macleay River has overtopped its levee, putting an estimated 50,000 people at risk of isolation, especially in the heavily affected town of Kempsey.
In response to the flooding, evacuation centers have been established in multiple locations, including Dungog and Kempsey, to assist residents who have been displaced.
Emergency services have been overwhelmed, responding to over 1,000 incidents related to severe flooding in New South Wales, with around 340 rescues performed in just the past 24 hours.
Tragically, a 63-year-old man's body was discovered in a flood-affected home in New South Wales, prompting a police investigation and a report for the coroner.
The flooding has also caused significant disruptions for local farmers, with reports of livestock losses and ongoing efforts to provide aid through community support networks.
NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed condolences for the deceased and cautioned that the community should brace for more bad news as rescue operations continue amid ongoing severe weather warnings.
Despite the chaos, Transport for NSW has reported that the Sydney rail network has returned to its regular schedule following recent disruptions caused by a collapsed high-voltage wire.
