Lauren Ingrid Flanigan, a 32-year-old mother charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter, Sophia Rose, died in hospital on June 1, 2025, after being found unresponsive in her prison cell.

Flanigan had been incarcerated for just a week, following the alleged stabbing of her daughter on May 26, 2025, and was scheduled to appear in court in July.

Emergency services discovered Sophia Rose with multiple stab wounds in the front yard of their home in Moore Park Beach, where she was pronounced dead shortly after responders arrived.

At the time of the incident, Flanigan's two younger children, aged one and two, were present but unharmed and are now in the care of their father.

Police recovered a knife believed to be the murder weapon from the scene and are conducting a forensic examination of the home, although they have not confirmed any history of family violence or mental health issues.

In the days leading up to the incident, Flanigan allegedly posted disturbing messages on social media, hinting at her troubled state of mind.

After being found unresponsive in her cell, Flanigan was transported to Princess Alexandra Hospital, where she was placed in intensive care.

Queensland Corrective Services is conducting an investigation into Flanigan's death, which will include a report for the coroner, a standard procedure for deaths in custody.

An independent review by Queensland Corrective Services is also underway to assess the circumstances surrounding her death.

Family friend Connor Thompson described Sophia as a sweet child and initiated a GoFundMe campaign that has raised $55,000 to support Sophia's father and siblings during this tragic time.

Before the incident, Flanigan had posted on social media about being a 'warrior of light' and advocating against domestic violence, reflecting a stark contrast to the events that unfolded.
