Australia Opens First Hydrogen Station in Geelong to Power Emission-Free Heavy Vehicles
June 14, 2025
Viva Energy, the company behind the station, aims to expand its hydrogen transport fuel initiatives and is actively seeking partnerships to promote broader adoption of hydrogen.
The facility is designed to support a zero-emissions future, particularly benefiting the heavy vehicle sector with features tailored for large trucks.
It is capable of refuelling at least 10 trucks simultaneously, enhancing operational efficiency for commercial transport.
Hydrogen is generated on-site using a 2.5MW electrolyser powered by renewable energy and recycled water from the Barwon Water Northern Water Plant.
Initially, a fleet of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, including prime movers, buses, and waste management trucks, will utilize the new facility, with partners like Toll Group and Cleanaway involved.
The project, which represents a $62 million investment, was launched by Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Victorian Minister for Climate Action, Lily D’Ambrosio, showcasing a commitment to sustainable transport.
Supported by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), this initiative exemplifies collaboration between government and industry to drive innovation in the transport sector.
Australia has inaugurated its first hydrogen refuelling station in Geelong, a significant step towards enabling hydrogen-powered and emission-free heavy vehicles in the region.
The station can dispense at least 300 kg of hydrogen every two hours, providing a refuelling experience comparable to that of diesel engines.
Marles emphasized the potential of hydrogen to decarbonise the Australian economy, leveraging the country's abundant solar and wind resources.
Additionally, the site includes ultra-fast charging capabilities with a blueberry DC Ultra-Fast Charger delivering 350kW speeds, specifically designed for heavy vehicles.
This initiative combines renewable hydrogen production with ultra-fast EV charging, addressing the challenge of decarbonising Australia's heavy transport sector, a major contributor to national emissions.
