New MG U9 Ute Challenges Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux with Luxury Features and Competitive Pricing
September 21, 2025
The MG U9 is a new dual-cab ute entering the Australian market in 2025, offering a range of three variants—Explore, Explore X, and Explore Pro—with increasing levels of equipment and luxury features.
Priced starting at $52,990 for the base Explore model and reaching $60,990 for the Explore Pro, the U9 aims to compete with established rivals like Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux by providing high-value features at a competitive price.
The U9 features a modern, car-like design with dimensions of approximately 5500mm in length and 2265mm in width, and it offers a spacious interior equipped with dual 12.3-inch screens, wireless connectivity, and premium materials such as vegan leather.
Standard equipment across the range includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, LED headlights, heated mirrors, keyless entry, and multiple driver assistance systems.
Unique features include an electric two-step tailgate, rear-cabin access panel, and advanced safety tech like autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, and adaptive cruise control, with higher trims offering surround-view cameras.
A standout feature is the optional rear firewall drop-down, which allows the rear of the cab to open out to the tray, making the U9 versatile enough to serve as a party truck—an uncommon trait in segment rivals.
Built with off-road capabilities in mind, the U9 includes full-time 4WD, low-range gearing, differential locks on higher models, and multi-link independent rear suspension to enhance ride quality and handling on various terrains.
Powered by a 2.5-litre turbo-diesel engine producing 160kW and 520Nm, the U9 offers strong performance, with a braked towing capacity of 3500kg and a payload capacity ranging from 770kg to 1102kg.
The U9’s suspension setup is more car-like with multi-link coil suspension replacing the live rear axle found in some rivals, contributing to better ride comfort and stability.
Sharing its platform with the LDV Terron 9, the U9 features a more refined suspension system and a power tailgate with fold-down step and cupholders, enhancing practicality.
Compared to segment leaders like the Ford Ranger Wildtrak, the U9 is priced lower while offering more power and SUV-like handling, though it has slightly lower payload and wading depth.
Full pricing and specifications will be announced closer to its Australian launch, with pre-orders already underway, including a $1000 accessory bonus.
The U9 comes with a five-year warranty (extendable to seven years with MG dealer servicing), a five-star ANCAP safety rating, and standard safety features such as seven airbags and electronic stability control.
