Flemish Government Boosts School Healthy Food Budget to €70 Million by 2026
April 29, 2025
The Flemish government, under the leadership of Minister Caroline Gennez, has announced a significant increase in the annual budget for healthy food in schools, raising it from €23 million this year to €70 million starting in 2026.
This initiative aims to benefit all 720,000 pupils in nursery and primary education across Flanders, ensuring equitable access to healthy food regardless of socio-economic background.
Gennez emphasizes that every child deserves access to nutritious food, which is crucial for improving health, learning performance, and providing equal opportunities, especially as 1 in 10 Flemish children regularly lacks access to good food.
This policy aligns with the campaign promises of the Flemish socialist party Vooruit, which advocated for free school meals for every child during last year's election.
Schools will have the autonomy to decide their food offerings, which must include healthy, fiber-rich options like fruits and vegetables, and can also provide breakfast packages or hot meals.
Local authorities and primary schools can apply for government support, with the government contributing €100 for every €70 provided by municipalities, enabling tailored local food programs.
Various initiatives for healthy meals are already being implemented in Flemish cities such as Antwerp, Ghent, Leuven, and Roeselare, with similar programs also present in Brussels schools.
