Belgium Launches Early Digital ID Card, Enhancing Access to Government Services
October 18, 2025
This initiative marks a significant modernization effort, improving digital access to personal identification and government services for Belgian citizens.
Looking ahead, Belgian officials, including Minister Bernard Quintin, aim to make the digital identity card fully functional for international travel in the future.
Belgium has launched a digital version of its national identity card through the MyGov.be app, which has been officially available since October 14, 2025, ahead of the original 2026 schedule.
To access digital documents and services, users must activate their accounts on MyGov.be by scanning a QR code and entering a PIN.
The digital identity card enables Belgians to access various documents such as vaccination certificates, driving license data, and civil status attestations, although these digital documents currently lack legal validity.
The rollout was announced by Minister Bernard Quintin and was initially planned for 2026, but it was made available earlier than expected.
