Severe Solar Storm Set to Strike Earth Tonight: Disruptions Expected
May 10, 2024
NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center predicts a severe solar storm to strike Earth tonight.
The storm is caused by solar flares, coronal mass ejections, and variations in solar wind affecting Earth's magnetosphere.
With a Severe (G4) rating, this is the first alert of its kind issued since January 2005.
Anticipated effects include disruptions to power grids, GPS, and radio and satellite communications.
The solar cycle is ongoing and won't conclude until 2030, leaving satellite operators vulnerable.
Previous significant geomagnetic storm occurred in March 2024, with the most extreme event recorded in October 2003.
A press conference by the Space Weather Prediction Center is scheduled for today at 10 a.m. ET to address the storm's potential impacts.
