The HBO Harry Potter TV series announces Nicholas Hoult as the new Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2, taking over the role from Kenneth Branagh as the project moves forward on a high-profile adaptation track.

Season 1 is slated to premiere on Christmas Day 2026, with each season designed to cover one book from J.K. Rowling’s saga, beginning with The Philosopher’s Stone and potentially extending to seven or eight seasons if The Deathly Hallows is split across two installments.

Lockhart is depicted as vanity- and fame-obsessed, skilled with Memory Charms, and an author who writes about encounters with dark creatures.

Backlash has included social media critiques and LGBT publications raising concerns that controversy could undermine queer-positive reception and goodwill toward the cast.
