Ethereum Drops EOF from Fusaka Upgrade Amid Developer Pushback, Focuses on PeerDAS for Scalability
April 29, 2025
Ethereum has decided to exclude the EVM Object Format (EOF) from the upcoming Fusaka upgrade after facing substantial pushback from the community.
This decision was reached during the Ethereum All Core Developers (ACD) call on April 28, 2025, under the guidance of Tim Beiko, Protocol Support Lead at the Ethereum Foundation.
Beiko explained that removing EOF was essential to keep the upgrade on schedule and to concentrate on PeerDAS, a key feature designed to enhance Ethereum's scalability and data availability.
Originally, EOF was anticipated to be included in the Fusaka upgrade, which is set for the latter half of 2025, as noted by Tomasz Stańczak, co-executive director at the Ethereum Foundation.
EOF was intended to reform the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) through various Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs), aiming to simplify and improve smart contract development.
However, many developers struggled to grasp the implications of the specific EOF variant they supported, leading to confusion during discussions.
This ongoing debate over different versions of EOF has complicated coordination among developers, ultimately hindering development progress.
Critics of EOF argued that it introduced unnecessary complexity to the blockchain network, prompting a reevaluation of its implementation.
Despite its removal from the Fusaka upgrade, Beiko emphasized that advocates for EOF could still make a case for its inclusion in future upgrades, particularly in the upcoming Glamsterdam.
