Coinbase's Base Network Slashes Block Times with Flashblocks for Real-Time Transactions
July 17, 2025
The faster transaction speeds are designed to support high-frequency trading, gaming, and instant social media interactions through the newly launched Base App.
The upgrade, developed in collaboration with Flashbots, was successfully tested on Base's Sepolia network prior to deployment.
Base, Coinbase's Layer 2 network, has implemented Flashblocks, significantly reducing block times from two seconds to just 200 milliseconds.
This speed enhancement aims to surpass competitors like Arbitrum and Optimism, which have similar block finalization times of around two seconds.
Base functions as an optimistic rollup, processing transactions off the Ethereum main network and periodically bundling them for broadcast to Ethereum.
With Flashblocks, transactions can now be confirmed in just 0.2 seconds, enabling real-time interactions for users.
