Spain to Legalize 300,000 Migrants Annually to Boost Economy and Tackle Labor Shortages
November 20, 2024
Migration Minister Elma Saiz stated that Spain requires around 250,000 to 300,000 foreign workers each year to maintain its standard of living, framing the choice as between being an open, prosperous country or a closed, poor one.
The reform is driven by economic needs, as Spain urgently requires additional labor to sustain its standard of living.
Saiz has reiterated that the legalization initiative is not just about cultural enrichment and human rights, but also about fostering economic prosperity for Spain.
Many of these migrants come from countries like Mali, Senegal, and Mauritania, often undertaking dangerous sea journeys to reach Spain in search of better opportunities.
Spain's government plans to legalize approximately 300,000 undocumented migrants annually starting in May 2024, a move aimed at addressing the country's labor shortages and aging population.
Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has emphasized that these migration policies are essential for combating Spain's low birthrate and enhancing economic prosperity.
The newly approved immigration reform simplifies visa procedures, extends job-seeker visas from three months to one year, and facilitates family reunification, thereby strengthening labor protections for migrants.
This legalization policy is designed to protect migrants from exploitation and abuse, aiming to combat human trafficking and rights violations.
In 2023, Spain issued 1.3 million visas to foreigners, reflecting its open stance towards immigration, which contrasts with the tightening border controls seen in other European nations.
The Canary Islands have experienced a significant rise in irregular migrant arrivals, with nearly 40,000 reported in 2024, indicating increasing migration pressures.
The recent regulation change, described as the most comprehensive reform of immigration regulations in over a decade, aims to address Spain's demographic challenges.
Currently, around 2.9 million foreigners contribute to Spain's social security system, accounting for approximately 14% of total contributions, highlighting their role in the economy.
