The removal of land border checkpoints will significantly ease the travel experience for approximately 15,000 daily cross-border commuters.

Dual border controls will be implemented at the airport and port, with Spanish National Police managing Schengen controls alongside British immigration agents.

European citizens can continue using their ID or passport for entry, but will now undergo Schengen border control at the airport and port without land border delays.

British citizens must present a passport and comply with Schengen area stay limits, monitored by Spanish authorities at entry points.

Instead of border checks, customs inspections will be conducted at Gibraltar's airport and seaport by joint British and Spanish officials.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič hailed the agreement as a 'historic milestone', while Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares noted it signifies the end of the last barrier in continental Europe.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the deal as securing British sovereignty, while opposition figures expressed skepticism about its implications.

Although an agreement has been reached, it is not yet in force as legal formalities are pending, so current transitional arrangements remain in place for now.

The agreement is vital for the local economy, as Gibraltar is the largest employer in Andalusia, where many residents rely on cross-border employment.
