Former Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar is advocating for a united Ireland to be established as a new state that benefits all citizens, rather than merely annexing Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland.

He believes that unification represents a unique opportunity to design a new state and constitution, a chance that arises only once every century.

During a recent speech at St Mary’s University in Belfast, Varadkar expressed hope that the Irish government will establish a forum to discuss the unity of Ireland, emphasizing that aspirations should lead to concrete actions.

He highlighted the importance of creating a bill of rights and civil protections in the envisioned united Ireland, ensuring it is a better state for all citizens.

Varadkar noted that the context of any future referendums would differ from the past, where partition was not voted on, allowing citizens in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to express their preferences regarding unification.

He compared the current situation to historical forums like the New Ireland Forum and the Forum for Peace and Reconciliation, suggesting a modern equivalent to facilitate dialogue among interested parties.

In response to criticism from Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly regarding the slow progress towards a united Ireland, Varadkar pointed out the declining percentage of votes for unionist parties as a significant factor in the push for unity.

Varadkar acknowledged concerns about potential loyalist violence in response to reunification, suggesting that any violent reaction would likely come from a small minority, especially in the context of referendums.

During his visit to Colaiste Feirste, a school promoting Irish medium education, Varadkar acknowledged the growth of the Irish medium education sector and the community's efforts to enhance Irish language opportunities.

He learned about community growth and future plans for an Irish Language Heritage Centre, highlighting the expanding Irish language community.
