NorseMap positions Cork’s Viking heritage within a broader European narrative, highlighting the city’s founding as a Viking settlement and the significance of reintroducing Viking sounds to Cork.

Leading researchers, including Professor Tom Birkett and Professor John F. Cryan, stress public participation and the fusion of digital humanities with community engagement.

The project employs a crowdsourced, pan-European approach centered on the iViking App, inviting people to upload photos and encounters with Viking heritage to create the first comprehensive map of Viking legacy.

The iViking App is now available for download, allowing users to contribute to NorseMap by sharing images and stories of Viking imagery in everyday life.

NorseMap seeks to explore how the Viking past shapes culture, identity, tourism, politics, and media today, and to analyze how myths, misinformation, and extremist Viking narratives propagate over time.
