In a recent interview, Sebastien Lecornu outlined the rule that ministers who actively support a presidential candidate must leave the government, signaling a strict stance on campaign involvement by ministers.

Lecornu added that ministers may show sympathy for candidates but should refrain from public attacks, and those who handle campaign operations could lose their ministerial roles.

Several ministers have publicly backed candidates, including Gerald Darmanin, Maud Bregeon, Benjamin Haddad, and Mathieu Lefèvre, who support Edouard Philippe’s lineup or candidates aligned with the central bloc, while David Amiel and Roland Lescure prefer Gabriel Attal, who led a public campaign event with four ministers in attendance.

Lecornu emphasized that the government should prioritize state affairs over campaign activity, warning that active campaign participation is grounds for removal from the cabinet and that the government is not a purely technical body.

Sébastien Lecornu reiterated that he will not be a candidate for president himself.
