Framework Laptop 13: High-Res Display Shines but Battery Life Falls Short
August 13, 2024
The Framework Laptop 13 has introduced a new high-resolution display option, featuring a 2880 x 1920 resolution and a 120 Hz refresh rate, significantly enhancing visual performance over previous models.
This new display also boasts a peak brightness of 500 nits, an improvement from the previous 400 nits, which enhances visibility in bright conditions.
The latest iteration of the laptop is powered by new mainboards featuring Intel's Meteor Lake-based Core Ultra processors, including models Ultra 5 125H, Ultra 7 155H, and Ultra 7 165H.
These processors offer improved power efficiency and thermal management, supporting up to 96 GB of DDR5 RAM.
While the review unit equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H and 32GB DDR5 performed well in benchmarks, it lagged behind competitors in single-core tests.
Battery life for the device was recorded at just under 10 hours, which is notably lower than competitors like the Dell XPS 13, which lasts over 19 hours.
The 2.8K display, while visually impressive, negatively impacts battery life and causes the device to run warm with a loud fan.
The laptop also features a new 9.2-megapixel webcam designed to enhance low-light performance, although early reviews suggest only subtle improvements in image quality over the previous model.
While the keyboard is comfortable, users have reported responsiveness issues with the touchpad, particularly in its upper half.
One of the standout features of the Framework Laptop 13 is its unmatched repairability and configurability, allowing users to upgrade nearly every component.
The laptop can be purchased in both pre-built and DIY configurations, catering to casual users and tech enthusiasts alike.
Framework has maintained a commitment to modularity, consistently updating its 13-inch laptop annually since its launch.
