Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller has announced a mini-competitive season featuring six-versus-six (6v6) gameplay, which will launch during the mid-point of Season 15.

The upcoming Spotlight event is anticipated to be pivotal in Overwatch 2's strategy to regain its competitive edge in the hero shooter market.

The Role Queue version of 6v6 previously accounted for approximately 10% of all hours played, indicating a notable interest in this gameplay format.

Players are encouraged to participate in the Spotlight event on February 12, where significant changes to Overwatch's core gameplay will be unveiled.

The decision to reintroduce 6v6 gameplay comes after community pressure to move away from the current 5v5 format, which limits teams to one tank.

Keller acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the demand for 6v6 gameplay but suggested that it is likely to remain part of Overwatch 2 in some form.

Despite the introduction of 6v6, the core format of Overwatch 2 remains five-versus-five, with no immediate plans to permanently replace it.

To participate in the current 6v6 mode, players should select the 'Play' option, choose the 'Unranked' card, and then pick the 'Minimum One 6v6' option.

This announcement of the 6v6 mode arrives amid increasing competition from NetEase's Marvel Rivals, which has drawn players and streamers away from Overwatch.

Currently, Overwatch 2 is utilizing a 6v6 Min 1, Max 3 version, allowing players to experience this format until February 4, 2025.

Previous tests for 6v6, including the Role Queue format, demonstrated a demand for this gameplay style, with the Role Queue mode accounting for nearly 10% of play hours.

The mini-competitive season for 6v6 is expected to last until the start of Season 16, providing players with more opportunities to engage in this format.
